5 Tips for Avoiding Common Blogger Mistakes
59
Where is blogging taking you? If you are like me you start off targeting a specific niche and then focus all your efforts learning everything you can about the niche. While doing this you also find that an essential step for success as a blogger is communicating your message. You search the blogging sphere to find blogs with high readership; analyzing them to determine how the blog is able to successfully communicate their message. The task is never ending, because attracting and retaining readers is critical.
Like almost everyone else who has a blog, I initially encountered many difficulties. These problems were generally associated with writing for the print market. Writing for the online readers is different and requires a different set of skills. Many of my troubles were based on the misconception – if you build it, they will come. I soon found out that my readership consisted of one – me. Learning from these mistakes, my blog soon grew to a large readership.
Recommendations for Improving Your Blog
I would like to share five tips or recommendations for developing a blog with a large readership.
Irregular Blogging – this is almost the kiss of death for a blog. Readers like to visit blogs with something to say, along with regular posts. For example – I post entries on my blog on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Whatever posting schedule you select, you must follow it as close as possible.
Domain Name – for bloggers who want to fill a niche it is critical for you to establish your own domain name through a hosting service. Using the free WordPress.com and Blogger.com has its advantages; however, they have severe limitations too.
You cannot make any money using a free blogging service and creative blogging designs are not possible. I recommend WordPress.org for your own blogging. It is a free state-of-the-art publishing platform with high web standards and is easy to use.
Not Spreading the Word – the mistaken perception that readers will flock to your blog can actually happen if you let them know you exist. It took me awhile to learn about social media websites Twitter, FaceBook, Stumble Upon, Reddit, Delicious, Buzz Up, Digg, Sphinn, and many more similar services. Social networking is the neon sign which says – I have something to say here, come check me out.
Not Being Heard Above the Blogging Noise – the blogosphere is a noisy place and your blog must rise above this background noise by being unique, different. You can still talk about what others are saying; however, you need to give your message meaning which separates you from the pack. Take the noise and give it life, by taking it into the future or new direction which others have not done. Do not follow the pack, be a leader of the pack.
Purveyor of All Knowledge – there are many other bloggers out there who want to be just as successful as you and I do. An important thing to remember is they have knowledge, you have knowledge, and I have knowledge. It is impossible for you to know everything about your blog’s niche.
I soon found this out for myself and discovered the need for constant research to remain ahead of my blogging competitors. This is what you must do to be on the leading edge of your niche and blogosphere – research, read other blogs, and keep current on the latest technologies for improving your blog.
Blogging is not as easy as many people think, because it takes work and doggedness to succeed. This success comes with investing time, improving skills, and remaining on the cutting edge. Although these are five common mistakes that many bloggers encounter and overcome or wither on the blogging vine, there a many more mistakes that others encounter.
